Established in the year 1960, Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of SIES. Teachers of the department shoulder key responsibilities in corporate management of the institute.

Programme offered: B.Sc. in Mathematics

The Programme aims at developing critical thinking, logical and reasoning ability of the students, preparing them to take up Masters in Mathematics and allied subjects like Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics.

Core Courses:

Discrete Mathematics, One variable and Multivariable Calculus, Abstract and Linear Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Number Theory and Metric Topology.

Skill enhancement courses:

Computer Programming and Applications (for B.Sc.), Basic Spreadsheet and word processing Techniques (for B. Sc. and B. Com.), Basic Presentation and Designing Techniques (for B. Sc. and B. Com.), Business Mathematics and Statistics (for B. Com.)

The department recommends exceptionally bright students for the MTTS programme (Mathematics Training and Talent Search). Alumni interactions, Career Guidance guest lectures, Seminars are organized to generate interest in the subject.

Individual assignments, presentations, projects, class assignments are some of the teaching learning methods used for continuous internal evaluation of the students. Study material is shared with the students online in MS Teams. Mathematical Softwares like GeoGebra, Desmos, etc are used to explain concepts. In addition to the core courses, other relevant courses based on Mathematics through portals like Spoken Tutorial, Swayam, etc are offered to the students for earning extra credits.

As a part of the Institutional co-curricular festival, the department encourages students to participate in interesting events like poster competition, math treasure hunt, quizzes, puzzles,etc. The purpose of these events is to take students beyond books and classrooms and generate interest in the subject.

Pathways to develop Research Skills in Mathematics

5th March 2022, Mathematics Department

This one day webinar was conducted under the RUSA Grant to bring together academicians, faculty involved in research or intend to do research and students with research aptitude and to nurture research aptitude by exchanging knowledge and ideas. Various eminent Mathematicians were invited. Around 70 participants including teachers and students attended the webinar.

National Mathematics Day Celebration

22nd December 2021, Mathematics Department

National Mathematics is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Ramanujan, one of the greatest Indian Mathematicians. The session started with a brief description about the life of Ramanujan by Deep Bhavesh Padharia, a student of SYBSc. This was followed by talk by the resource person, Anoop Skaria Varghese. The title of the talk was ‘Mystical Numbers’. The talk was based on introduction to certain numbers of special form like Mersenne Numbers, Fermat Numbers, Perfect Numbers, Amicable Numbers, etc. and their applications.

Design and Presentation of a Poster

29th October 2021, Mathematics Department

The objective of this online workshop was to equip students with effective poster presentation skills. The resource person, Dr. Vidhya Satish, Director, SIES Institute of Early Childhood Care Education, Sion west, through her presentation described the Dos and Donts of making a good poster. She explained the components of a poster and how one can effectively express oneself through it.

Data Science

23rd December 2019, Mathematics Department

One of the speakers of the event was Mr. Jasraj Date, our alumni and a Data scientist at Emotix who gave the audience a glimpse of his journey from being a Mathematics student in SIES to being a Data scientist. The purpose of the seminar was awareness of this new trending concept and the importance of Mathematics in it.

Talk on 'Fascinating Primes-An Order in their Disorder!'

27th July 2015, Mathematics Department

This talk was delivered by Dr. V. V. Hemasundar, Associate Professor of Mathematics at SIWS College who is actively involved in research in the area of Real and Complex Analysis. The talk enlightened students about mathematical topics beyond stipulated syllabus and exposed them to new areas of research.

A. Tharwinvikram of FYBSc C-644 stood third in Mathematics Crossword Puzzle held at NES Ratnam College of ASC, Bhandup(W).
