Jignyasa 2024: An Intercollegiate Research Meet

The Research meet aimed to demystify research. Its purpose was to inculcate research aptitude among students, thereby motivating them to pursue research. It gave them an ideal platform to present their research and exchange their ideas with peers and faculties.

Guest talk on Crushing Finals-study tips

The Department of Philosophy arranged for a guidance talk by Ms. Tejashwini H to help students with their anxiety and stress during exams. The talk started with great enthusiasm by first understanding where anxiety related to exams came from. The talk highlighted how due to our irrational beliefs and thinking we bring stress upon ourselves. The talk then moved forward with the students asking questions and understanding where their self defeating thoughts come from. A philosophical touch with logic to deal with the stress during exams was helpful to the students to focus only on those things that we have control over. The talk ended by giving philosophical antidotes to bring in a better structure to help organize and strategise a study routine for the students.

Tattvam Newsletter Launch and Talk on Future Career Prospects

The Department of Philosophy organized a guest talk on Future Career Prospects in Philosophy , by Dr. Uma Shankar, Principal and Head, department of Philosophy which was also followed by the inaugural of the newsletter Effulgence to Reality. The session began with highlighting the importance of Philosophy and its relevance in everyday life. This was followed with understanding broader aspects of careers related to philosophy. The session brought in awareness about the scope and field of study in philosophy to the students. The talk enhanced the students with career options in Philosophy after graduation. The talk ended with helping students feel motivated toward their future making them aware of the scope of the field.

Visit to Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli

The main objective of the visit was to offer students, practical exposure beyond the confines of traditional classroom learning. Recognizing the pivotal role that experiential learning plays in shaping a holistic understanding of environmental science, the department seized the opportunity to facilitate this immersive educational experience.

Nisarga green club organized a workshop where students were involved in crafting, creating and learning the art of transforming the waste into useful items by raising the concern about solid waste and its impact on human health and environment.

The interactive session was filled with real-life examples which helped the audience understand the various forms of IPRs and the criteria to classify scientific /novel work into a particular type of inteJlectual property. Participants got an overview of the procedure for filling of the patent by persons/companies/educational institutes. The role of Patent Cooperation treaty and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was explained. The speaker emphasized the management of IP systems in pharmaceutical industries.

National Science day celebration

National Science day was celebrated by conducting an exhibition for the students of various schools. Approximately 450 plus students from four different schools attended the exhibition and they were delighted with the explanation that students gave regarding the specimen displayed.

Guest Talk on History of Health Policy in Maharashtra

The Department of Philosophy invited Dr. Varsha Muley, Associate Prof., Head, Department. Of History to share her expertise on the public health policy to help the students with understanding the importance and relevance of the Public health Policy. The talk provided a great insight to the students in understanding the relevance of public health policy during the pandemic especially. The talk also highlighted the history and origin of the policy. The students gained insight into the origin and history of the procedure of public health policy which was beneficial.

Green Awareness Seminar on Noise Pollution: A silent Killer

The seminar was organized by Nisarga Green Club on 17th February 2024 to sensitize the students towards increasing noise pollution and how it affects human health and environment. The lecture was held by the expert in this field.

Guest Talk on Ancient Greek Philosophy

A guest talk was organized by the department of philosophy where Prof. Vasileios Syros was invited on a virtual mode to acquaint students with his knowledge on Ancient Greek Philosophy. The talk began with highlighting the features and relevance of Ancient Greek Philosophy, which then later focused on areas of professional success achieved by the Greek philosophers. The talk ended with students asking questions out of curiosity which then led to an engaging discussion which enabled the students to understand the relevance and scope of Philosophy.

Workshop on Base Metals Trading and Risk Management

Workshop organised by the Economics Association in collaboration with Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. to provide participants with insights into base metals trading and risk management strategies.

Visit of the Trunk Museum

6th February 2024, History Association

History Association along with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastusangrahalaya, Time Unboxed- Unveiling Treasures at The Trunk Museum. Two treasures were opened by the Trunk Museum. One, on 6th February 2024 -The Harappan Civilization. Second on 8th February 2024- The Egyptian Civilization. Students very enthusiastically enjoyed both the sessions attending and interacting in a large number.

Study visit to Sahyadri farms and Kapse foundation

5th February 2024, Philosophy Association

A study tour for students of TYBA ( Philosophy, Economics, and History departments) was organized to Sahyadri Farms, Nashik. Students visited Kapse Foundation as well, as a part of the tour. It enhanced students understanding about varied interdisciplinary topics. Kapse foundation enhanced the students understanding about the process of making a Paithani Saree. Its intricate crafting process, values attached with the place, origin etc, was brought to attention. Students, professors as well as the founders of the kapse foundation had an engaging session which included shared questions and experiences.

Aseem Khoj -Utkarsh Event

A treasure hunt event organized by the department of Philosophy/ Tattvam Association on 18 January 2024. The event titled Aseem khoj: Boundless search focused on the theme of the endless search that an individual engages itself in his life. The intercollegiate event began with participants being given a briefing about the treasure hunt. A team of three participants was made.

Visit to Maharashtra Nature Park

Nature trail is an integral part of Environmental Science course. To experience what the students are learning in their classroom such nature trails are important. For the holistic development of the students the experiential learning plays a very important role. Environmental science course includes the topics like composting, plant and animal adaptations. The visit to the Maharashtra Nature Park will help the students to have firsthand experience and also appreciate the beauty of nature.

The Department of Philosophy, visited the NSS Camp at Asangaon in Maharashtra to conduct an activity titled Tell a Tale: Ethics Through Stories for the children of the school. It was a captivating interactive storytelling event for children that was an immersive experience that encouraged young minds to explore the realms of ethics, empathy, and decision-making in a fun and engaging way through traditional Indian ethical stories of the Jataka tales, Panchatantra and more. Students brought in their philosophical perspectives towards the end which signified success of the field visit.

The water treatment process is studies by the students of second year of environmental studies as a part of the theory. Through this visit they were able to get the firsthand experience of the process carried out at the Effluent and sewage treatment plant. The visit to ETP and STP was organized for the experiential learning of the students.

The Department of Philosophy arranged a movie-viewing event in the Auditorium on 25th September, 2023. Students from different streams attended the film screening of Dead Poets Society. The movie screening began at 11:30 am, and went on for around an hour before it was paused, and the attendees had a discussion about what they had observed in the film by then, and what takeaways they had. After a short question and answer session, the students learnt that the Society represented individual expression of students, free from the bounds of the prep school that they attended

Awareness Program on Eco-friendly celebration of festivals

Students of SYBSc (10 students) and FYBSc(12 students) Environmental Science decided to interact with school students through presentations, models, and quiz games to spread awareness to impart awareness regarding environmental problems caused due to negligence, especially during festivals, and highlight practical solutions for the same to the young minds.

Visit to Chinmaya Mission

The Department of Philosophy conducted a study visit to Chinmaya Mission trust located in Powai, Mumbai. The second year and third year students together with our professors visited the Chinmaya Ashram. Ms. Varsha, senior volunteer from the mission, gave a guided tour of the place, explained the journey of Swami Chinmayananda, his teachings and how they manage to keep those teachings alive. The ashram is built in an infinity shape & the philosophical teachings are beautifully portrayed through its intricate architecture

The Alumina talk session was held on July 15th, 2023 at 11:00 PM, in Room no 8 of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Autonomous). The session was organized by the Tattvam Association, Philosophy Department and featured four graduates who shared their views on the value of philosophy and its practical and ethical applications in life and work. The session aimed to explore the role and relevance of philosophy in the contemporary world, and to inspire and motivate the students and faculty who attended. The session was moderated by Professors present and likewise facilitated the discussion alongside.The interactive session helped the students to develop their critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills, as well as to explore their academic interests and career goals.

International Yoga Day-Prana the life force workshop

The Tattvam Philosophy Association, jointly with the NCC and NSS units of SIES and SIES Past Students Association commemorated the International Yoga Day on 21st June, 2023. The theme for this years International Yoga Day lecture cum demonstration was Prana : Life Force. The lecture aimed to provide the learners with the external knowledge of life/prana as a cosmic force and how one is able to feel its existence. The event took place in the college Auditorium of SIES College of Arts. Science and Commerce (Autonomous) started around 9:30 am and then was further directed with friendly environmental demonstrations in the surroundings of the college quadrangle.
