ISR Visit to Gothegar Ashramashala 23/12/23 The students had a first-hand experience of what it means to be part of a tribal village school. They truly experienced the kind of situation teach for India in the villages would entail. They actually used their knowledge of Marathi and Hindi to explain concepts in English grammar. Through activities such as Scavenger Hunt they were able to get the tribal children to communicate. Students and staff gave them chocolates, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and crayons as Christmas gifts. No photo gallery linked   Report
Student Symposium 11/09/23 The symposium was organized to provide the students an opportunity to share their ideas and creativity. The students of the Third Year BA English Literature Course presented their research papers on gender issues. All the students could utilize this opportunity in the best possible ways. Unequal gender pays, female infanticide, conditions of housewives under patriarchy, body image and status of women, stereotypes on academic achievement by women were some of the topics on which the papers were presented. The students had undertaken this task as a part of their internal assessment for Paper 6 in English Literature titled ‘Gender and Literature.’ The prize was bagged by Ms. Ananya Nair and Ms. Pooja Nair who had presented a paper on Women and their safety on the streets of Mumbai. Career Workshop in Collaboration with SIES ICE 08/09/23 The English Association in collaboration with SIES Institute of Comprehensive Education had organized a Career Workshop on 8th September 2023. The speakers of the event, Dr. Vidhya Satish- Director at SIES ICE and Ms. Lakshmi Shivakumar explained the students about several courses offered by the institute. The students were provided with detailed information about the Diploma and PG Diploma courses in Counselling, Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Dr. Vidhya Satish explained the structure as well as scope of these courses. Ms. Lakshmi Shivakumar too shared her experiences in this field. Through this event, all the students could have a clear understanding of the opportunities offered through such courses. Alumni Interaction on Careers in Teaching 26/08/23 The Department of English had organized an alumni meet on 26th August 2023 in order to provide the students some insights about the B.Ed course. The speakers of the event were Ms. Marina Kumar and Ms. Sneha Jacob. Both the speakers helped the students to broaden their knowledge about the course and its prospects. All the students who attended the event could clear their doubts from the speakers as they were currently pursuing this course. The speaker Ms. Sneha Jacob is also an English teacher while she is pursuing B.Ed. Her experiences and ideologies could act as valuable information and advice for all the students. They also talked about entrance examination and its process. The variations in course and structure were also well explained by them. They also talked about the colleges to apply to and the institutions that provide hybrid teaching as well. All the students could have a clear picture of the course and its benefits. The students who aspire to have a career in teaching could gain the information in a detailed manner. This paved a road for them with more clarity and better ideologies. Guest Lecture by "Teach for India" 22/07/23 They spoke about the problems that prevent children from having access to education. Furthermore, the effects of these problems were also presented with accurate data. This event turned out to be helpful for all the students as it made them aware about this organization that works for massive social improvement. The speakers also introduced the students to volunteering, internship and fellowship opportunities offered by the organization. They also shared about their personal experiences throughout the fellowship. Aarti Konar, a student from TYBA English Literature course has been volunteering there for few years and her valuable inputs also provided the students with more knowledge. Guest Lecture on "Psychoanalysis" 10/07/23 The Department of English had organized a guest lecture on Psychoanalysis for the TYBA English Literature students on 10th July, 2023. The speaker Ms. Shama Todurkar is the coordinator of the Psychology Department at SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce. Ms. Todurkar has a teaching experience of 17 years. Her areas of interest include indigenous psychology, social psychology and qualitative research. The lecture began by a warm introduction given by Jasleen Kaur Sehgal, Secretary of the English Association. Ms. Todurkar explained about psychoanalysis and its importance. Psychoanalysis includes a set of theories established to understand the unconscious mind and is widely used for treating various mental disorders. She elaborated on the theories put forward by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The lecture helped the students to know about the history of psychoanalysis, the developments in this field and several archetypes. Psychoanalysis is also included in literature as a significant mechanism to evaluate any piece of work. Psychoanalytical criticism helps the readers to analyse what the writer wants to convey through the characters and their psyche. Hence, this guest lecture has indeed helped the students to broaden their knowledge on these theories and their applications. National Webinar 07/08/21 The Department of English of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Autonomous, Sion (W) organized a National Webinar -"Cultural Trauma, Biopolitics and Precarious Lives in the 21st Century" by Dr. Pramod K. Nayar on 7th August, 2021. The event started at 4:50 p.m. and concluded at 6:30 p.m. in the evening and a total number of 244+ attendees participated in the webinar and 30+ people viewed the webinar on YouTube. Students, Professors and Research Scholars pan-India as well as across India actively participated in the event. Dr. Pramod K. Nayar, the speaker spoke about a specific form of cultural trauma connected with biopolitics i.e., Posthuman Trauma. Dr. Nayar explained the meanings of terms such as Cultural Trauma and Citizenship, Biopolitics, Eco Precarity, and Precarious Corporeality with the aid of a PowerPoint Presentation. He further elaborated his points by giving real-life and contemporary examples of books and movies. The second part of the event was a Q&A session with the speaker, students raised important and intriguing questions which were answered by Dr. Nayar. Essay Contest 30/01/21 Under Value Lab activities, value for the month of January was ‘Leadership’. On 30th January 2021, an intra-collegiate essay writing competition on ‘Leadership’ was conducted. The essays were to be of 1000-1200 words and were scrutinized by Ms Vrushali Gupte and Dr Seema C, professors of Philosophy and English departments respectively. Guest Lectures 30/11/20 Title: Wordsworld- Poets Unite! Objective: To learn to appreciate poetry and the solace it gives in difficult times. Methodology: Guest lecture and poetry writing competition (online) Report: Dr Vidya Premkumar, a published poet and professor, rendered a lecture on ‘The Importance of Poetry in Current Times’ on 30th November 2020. She explained how poetry can become a form of solace for people and how it helps in facing mental health issues. Later, in the second part of the event, the results of the online poetry writing competition- ‘Courage in Adversity’ were declared. All the winners and the participants were given e-certificates. International Webinar on 'Spatial Anxieties and Estrangement' 30/07/20 An International Webinar on 'Spatial Anxieties and Estrangement During and Post Pandemic: An International Perspective' by Dr. Peter Cunningham, Prof Emeritus, Faculty, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, was organized by the Department of English and SIES Central Training on 30th June 2020. The welcome address was given by Dr. Lakshmi Muthukumar, Head, Department of English. Dr. Cunningham examined the effects of the lockdown and the anxieties and estrangements faced by people especially with regard to the intimate spaces they occupy. The Question and answer session after the talk was vibrant and informative. The session was moderated by Ms. Vidya Hariharan and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Seema C. The webinar was held as part of the celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of SIES college of Arts, Science and Commerce (autonomous) Sion (W).
