Dr. Uma Shankar

On a rainy Monday morning 38 years ago, a fresh Arts graduate found a seat for herself amongst five dozen others. The place was like a tree to migrating birds. In time, it became her home and one day, she became the tree.

Like in the stories I have read and I teach, today life has come a full wonderful circle where I have been blessed to return the knowledge, understanding and love that I received, in manifold, to the students who occupy the very bench I sat on and to even those beyond the threshold of this institute.

Learning has no boundaries and education has no divides. I am ever grateful for the friend that came into my life in many forms, roles and passports. They have become my story. There has never been a better time in history, than this, to be offered the beacon of this magnificent establishment and be a part of the educational revolution. From scaling academic heights to distinction in community service, from housing a thriving art nucleus to practicing value based education, from committedly supporting the differently abled students to mentoring scholars globally, SIES has been at the forefront of excellence in education in this metropolis. The numerous awards and accreditations stand testimony.

I envision SIES to be a model institute that stands proud on the shoulders of its gifted teachers who will groom young students to be accomplished, fine young men and women of tomorrow. And to achieve this, we shall sharpen the existing system and create new avenues. I seek to empower the youth of today to be in integrity and compassion in whatever they do. If there is only one thing I want them to take away with them, in their years as a student in SIES the values like commitment, trust and honesty.

In my years left in this life, I do not know how much I will teach but I do know that I will always be learning. The challenges and responsibilities shall be shouldered with the trust in the team of the organization. SIES is a mighty institute and I am honoured to lead.

Only as high as I reach, can I grow
Only as far as I seek, can I go
Only as deep as I look, can I see
Only as much as I dream, can I be !!!
