The Department of Philosophy arranged for a guidance talk by Ms. Tejashwini H to help students with their anxiety and stress during exams. The talk started with great enthusiasm by first understanding where anxiety related to exams came from. The talk highlighted how due to our irrational beliefs and thinking we bring stress upon ourselves. The talk then moved forward with the students asking questions and understanding where their self defeating thoughts come from. A philosophical touch with logic to deal with the stress during exams was helpful to the students to focus only on those things that we have control over. The talk ended by giving philosophical antidotes to bring in a better structure to help organize and strategise a study routine for the students.

Tattvam Newsletter Launch and Talk on Future Career Prospects

The Department of Philosophy organized a guest talk on Future Career Prospects in Philosophy , by Dr. Uma Shankar, Principal and Head, department of Philosophy which was also followed by the inaugural of the newsletter Effulgence to Reality. The session began with highlighting the importance of Philosophy and its relevance in everyday life. This was followed with understanding broader aspects of careers related to philosophy. The session brought in awareness about the scope and field of study in philosophy to the students. The talk enhanced the students with career options in Philosophy after graduation. The talk ended with helping students feel motivated toward their future making them aware of the scope of the field.

Visit to Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli

The seminar was divided by four sessions resource persons like Prof. Devi N Ganesh , Prof. (Dr.) Ujjwala Chakradev (VC, SNDT University ), Ila Arun (theatre & film personality )Dr. T P Shashikumar , Shri Khalid Quaiser( ADG Police Maharashtra ) , Dr. S.P. Dubey, Dr. Satish Pandey , Dr. Rajendra Srivastav, Dr. Rekha Sharma & Dr. Usha Mishra have shared there expertise on Indian knowledge system. Participants got an overview of the procedure for filling of the patent by persons/companies/educational institutes. The role of Patent Cooperation treaty and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was explained. The speaker emphasized the management of IP systems in pharmaceutical industries.

National Science day celebration

History Association along with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastusangrahalaya, Time Unboxed- Unveiling Treasures at The Trunk Museum. Two treasures were opened by the Trunk Museum. One, on 6th February 2024 -The Harappan Civilization. Second on 8th February 2024- The Egyptian Civilization. Students very enthusiastically enjoyed both the sessions attending and interacting in a large number.

A study tour for students of TYBA ( Philosophy, Economics, and History departments) was organized to Sahyadri Farms, Nashik. Students visited Kapse Foundation as well, as a part of the tour. It enhanced students understanding about varied interdisciplinary topics. Kapse foundation enhanced the students understanding about the process of making a Paithani Saree. Its intricate crafting process, values attached with the place, origin etc, was brought to attention. Students, professors as well as the founders of the kapse foundation had an engaging session which included shared questions and experiences.

On 18th January, 2024 the Physics Department of SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce conducted its annual departmental festival named Gravity under Utkarsh. The theme chosen this year was Time and the hence the tagline: The Temporal Odyssey. The core of the festival was an exhibition, in which the volunteers, with crucial assistance from professors, managed to design, create, and put on display various exhibits, experiments and associated charts providing the attendees with a deep insight into the subject. The games were: Wire Buzzer Hydraulic Maze To summarize, the exhibition as a mix of ingenuity, creativity and skill of the volunteers fostering the curiosity and interest of the attendees. Along with the exhibition, various games were also organized by Gravity, which received a wide and enthusiastic response from the participants. The games organized under Gravity were: Chrono-Poly (14 Participants == 7 teams) Era Escapade (52 Participants == 13 teams) Meme-o-logy (8 Participants) These games aimed at stimulating not only the intellectual abilities of the participants, but also their critical thinking and decision-making abilities. With the mixture of enthusiastic participants and determined volunteers, all the games organized were a huge success.

Event 1: RANGEELA…. (Chase d Colours) RANGEELA was a game event about correlating colors with magical d elements, transition elements. The winners were: 1st prize: Zinia Soares (FYJC) and Anusri Nair (FYJC) 2nd Prize: Siddhi Sharma (FYBCOM) and Muthulakshmi (FYJC). Event 2: K -Mystery—The Chemical Treasure Hunt K -Mystery, the treasure hunt was a game held on 18th January 2024. It was a team game in which each team consisted of 2 members.The winners who found the treasure were: 1st Prize: Shaikh Wasim and Vivek Singh (MSc part 2 students). Event 3: Varnah—The Abstract Reality The CHROMOBLAST theme was imparted to provide a platform to build up innovative experiments on Colour Chemistry which are involved in our day-to-day life through an exhibition titled Varnah-The Abstract Reality was held in the chemistry main laboratory.

A debate on same-sex marriage in India

: The event started at with the release of the newsletter Popularis Politica. Dr. Rashmi Bhure congratulated the team and appreciated their hard work. The newsletter was displayed and then phase 1 of the debate started at 10:30 AM. The proposition side went first with teams of two taking turns to present their argument supporting same-sex marriage within the given time limit of 2 minutes. The arguments centred around the history of homosexuality in India through mentions of Indian Mythology, ancient scriptures and sculptures as proof, legalities that come with the right to marriage such as rights like adoption, joint loans etc. The opposing side started presenting their argument which was centred around the fact that same-sex marriage went against the law of nature and the institute of marriage and how Indian society is not yet ready for such a radical change. The opposition also talked about the separation of power and the constitutional structure that doesnt allow the judiciary to make such laws.

ISR Visit to Gothegar Ashramashala

The students had a first-hand experience of what it means to be part of a tribal village school. They truly experienced the kind of situation teach for India in the villages would entail. They actually used their knowledge of Marathi and Hindi to explain concepts in English grammar. Through activities such as Scavenger Hunt they were able to get the tribal children to communicate. Students and staff gave them chocolates, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and crayons as Christmas gifts.

The Department of Philosophy, visited the NSS Camp at Asangaon in Maharashtra to conduct an activity titled Tell a Tale: Ethics Through Stories for the children of the school. It was a captivating interactive storytelling event for children that was an immersive experience that encouraged young minds to explore the realms of ethics, empathy, and decision-making in a fun and engaging way through traditional Indian ethical stories of the Jataka tales, Panchatantra and more. Students brought in their philosophical perspectives towards the end which signified success of the field visit.

International Conference on Biology, Biodiversity, and Biotechnology of Fungi was organised on the 1st and 2nd of December, 2023, by the Department of Botany, SIES ASCS, in collaboration with Association of Fungal Biologists. The total number of participants registered was 120 out of which 80 attended and about 24 joined online. The total number of abstracts received was 72: 36 for oral and 36 for poster. 23 presented in person and 10 presented using virtual mode. The total number of posters presented were 32 out of 36.

The second year and third year students together with our professors visited the Chinmaya Ashram. Ms. Varsha, senior volunteer from the mission, gave a guided tour of the place, explained the journey of Swami Chinmayananda, his teachings and how they manage to keep those teachings alive. The ashram is built in an infinity shape & the philosophical teachings are beautifully portrayed through its intricate architecture

Student Symposium

The symposium was organized to provide the students an opportunity to share their ideas and creativity. The students of the Third Year BA English Literature Course presented their research papers on gender issues. All the students could utilize this opportunity in the best possible ways. Unequal gender pays, female infanticide, conditions of housewives under patriarchy, body image and status of women, stereotypes on academic achievement by women were some of the topics on which the papers were presented. The students had undertaken this task as a part of their internal assessment for Paper 6 in English Literature titled Gender and Literature. The prize was bagged by Ms. Ananya Nair and Ms. Pooja Nair who had presented a paper on Women and their safety on the streets of Mumbai. The event ended by a vote of thanks given by the Head of the Department- Ms. Lakshmi Muthukumar.

The English Association in collaboration with SIES Institute of Comprehensive Education had organized a Career Workshop on 8th September 2023. The speakers of the event, Dr. Vidhya Satish- Director at SIES ICE and Ms. Lakshmi Shivakumar explained the students about several courses offered by the institute. The students were provided with detailed information about the Diploma and PG Diploma courses in Counselling, Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Dr. Vidhya Satish explained the structure as well as scope of these courses. Ms. Lakshmi Shivakumar too shared her experiences in this field. Through this event, all the students could have a clear understanding of the opportunities offered through such courses. Their team provided brochures of the courses to the students which encapsulates all the details. The event ended with an interactive doubt clearing session.

The speaker Ms. Sneha Jacob is also an English teacher while she is pursuing B.Ed. Her experiences and ideologies could act as valuable information and advice for all the students. They also talked about entrance examination and its process. The variations in course and structure were also well explained by them. They also talked about the colleges to apply to and the institutions that provide hybrid teaching as well. All the students could have a clear picture of the course and its benefits. The session was organized by the Tattvam Association, Philosophy Department and featured four graduates who shared their views on the value of philosophy and its practical and ethical applications in life and work. The session aimed to explore the role and relevance of philosophy in the contemporary world, and to inspire and motivate the students and faculty who attended. The session was moderated by Professors present and likewise facilitated the discussion alongside.The interactive session helped the students to develop their critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills, as well as to explore their academic interests and career goals.

Visit to American Consulate

: The key theme of the visit was to understand the economic, political and social development in the United States of America. For this, the students were shown a documentary film titled Shes Beautiful When Shes Angry, which traced the history of feminist movement in U.S.A. giving the students an insight into the struggles of American women for equal political representation, voting rights and right to abortion. Finally, the students were greeted by Mr. Andrew Caruso, Economic Officer of the Consulate General, who was the guest speaker for the day. Mr. Caruso went on to explain about the recent visit by Prime Minister Modi to U.S.A.in June 2023 and how this visit has brought significant changes in the foreign policies of both the nations, especially in the field of technology. He then answered the questions raised by a few of the students. The visit came to an end with the vote of thanks and a group photograph being clicked.

The Department of English had organized a guest lecture on Psychoanalysis for the TYBA English Literature students on 10th July, 2023. The speaker Ms. Shama Todurkar is the coordinator of the Psychology Department at SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce. Ms. Todurkar has a teaching experience of 17 years. Her areas of interest include indigenous psychology, social psychology and qualitative research. The lecture began by a warm introduction given by Jasleen Kaur Sehgal, Secretary of the English Association. Ms. Todurkar explained about psychoanalysis and its importance. Psychoanalysis includes a set of theories established to understand the unconscious mind and is widely used for treating various mental disorders. She elaborated on the theories put forward by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The lecture helped the students to know about the history of psychoanalysis, the developments in this field and several archetypes. Psychoanalysis is also included in literature as a significant mechanism to evaluate any piece of work. Psychoanalytical criticism helps the readers to analyse what the writer wants to convey through the characters and their psyche. Hence, this guest lecture has indeed helped the students to broaden their knowledge on these theories and their applications. The lecture ended with an interactive conversation where the students came up with curious doubts.

The Tattvam Philosophy Association, jointly with the NCC and NSS units of SIES and SIES Past Students Association commemorated the International Yoga Day on 21st June, 2023. The theme for this years International Yoga Day lecture cum demonstration was Prana : Life Force. The lecture aimed to provide the learners with the external knowledge of life/prana as a cosmic force and how one is able to feel its existence. The event took place in the college Auditorium of SIES College of Arts. Science and Commerce (Autonomous) started around 9:30 am and then was further directed with friendly environmental demonstrations in the surroundings of the college quadrangle.

World Environment Day Quiz

5th June 2023, Commerce Department

The Department of Commerce organised an Environment Quiz on account of World Environment Day from 5th June 2023 to 8th June, 2023 on digital platform. The quiz was prepared on google form and was circulated among various departments and student groups within College. The quiz consisted of 20 questions, requiring a 60% score by the participants to qualify.

An orientation lecture

31st January 2023, Chemistry Department

An orientation lecture for M.Sc (I) Chemistry students was organized by department of Chemistry at WIRC, University of Mumbai Kalina. The students were accompanied by Dr. Santosh Katariya and Dr. Madhav Mane on Tuesday 30th January 2024. This was on job training which is mandatory paper for M.Sc Chemistry semester -II according to NEP

Industrial Visit

24th January 2023, Biotechnology Department

The BSc and MSc students visited Pure Gold Cheese Factory (Panchgani), Mapro factory (Mahabaleshwar) and Katraj Dairy (Pune).
