The One Credit Course on “Tree Appreciation” was conducted by
the Botany Department, which included one offline field visit to Rani
Bagh, Byculla on the 1st May, 2022 (Sunday) and eight online modules
from 7th May, 2022 to 10th May, 2022. These were followed by online
assessment of 40 marks in Google form format consisting of MCQ type
questions based on the modules conducted. The list of students who

16th Inter-Collegiate/Institute/Department Avishkar Research Convention 2021-22 was conducted online by Department of Students’ Development, University of Mumbai. Out of 28 Research Proposals (34 student participants) from SIES College, 8 Research Proposals were selected for the Zonal Level Final rounds and 2 of our students secured ranks in the Final rounds. SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion (W) was awarded Overall Championship (First Rank) in the 16th Avishkar Research Convention 2021-2022 from Mumbai University in Zone-II.

Credit Course

Department of Botany conducted one-credit course on Tree Appreciation in blended mode on 1st May 2022 and 7th May to 10th May 2022. One offline field visit to Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Udyan, Byculla was organized on 1st May, 2022 which lasted for about three hours. Interesting features of the plants and their unique remarkable significance were highlighted to the student participants in simple understandable language, considering their non-Botany background. Online lectures with the help of powerpoint presentations were conducted by every faculty of the Botany department from 7th May to 10th May, which covered various aspects of the plant world, focussing mainly on the tree species. A webinar on “Investment Strategies for Beginners” was organized by the Department of Statistics SIES College on 24th April 2022 & conducted by Mr. Ninad Padwal, Wealth Manager Sunit Investment. Mr. Padwal explained the reasons for investing early along with examples, he practically explained the idea of inflation and how to tackle it. He later explained the benefits of Systematic Investment Plans (SIP) along with real time returns from the same and how and where to invest for a prosperous future. Physics plays a dynamic and integral role across various fields. We consolidate diverse facets of the discipline to offer comprehensive exposure to students. This is achieved through a combination of demonstrations of MSc projects completed by the students, and research initiatives. Importantly, these resources are made available to the students free of cost. The sessions are facilitated not only by experienced teachers but also by Master of Science (MSc) students, adding a unique dimension to the learning experience. This collaborative approach serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it assists undergraduate students in making informed decisions about their future career paths by providing insights into the practical applications of physics. Secondly, it built confidence and professional development among MSc students, who gain valuable teaching experience by conducting demonstrations for undergraduate students. The session consists of GM counter experiment demonstrations, Demo of projects and Physics Department research lab visit.

Blood Donation Drive

The NSS Unit organised a Blood Donation Drive in College premises inviting students and teachers and non teaching staffs across all streams from the College. All the mechnical assistance was extended by the Sion Hospital Blood Ban, Sion , Mumbai. The NSS volunteers managed to convince pedestrians and passersby to come to College for donating blood. The programme started with ribbon cutting by the Principal Dr. Uma Shakar and successfully collected 84 units of blood. The technical head from Sion Hospital delivered a talk on collection of blood and its significance and usage to the NSS Volunteers and asked them to always donate and encourage other also to.

On 24th February 2022 as part of Utkarsha, two events were organized by TYBSc
Students. They were “Unlock the Doc”& “Shark Tank”.
Unlock the Doc: It was a treasure hunt where 6 p.d.f. files were shared where one had to find clues in one file to open the next one. The Team which could unlock all 6 files first were declared winners. The clues were based on general knowledge and logical thinking. A total of 17 teams participated for the event each having two participants. Top 3 winning teams were:

Shark Tank: The event is inspired by the famous TV show “Shark Tank India”. The participants were the entrepreneurs who had to pitch their business model to the investors, also called as the ‘Sharks’. The entrepreneurs then asked for some amount and in exchange offered some percentage of equity to the investors. On the basis of prospects of profitability and the idea’s vigour, the ‘Sharks’ countered the offer. Seven teams participated in the event; each team having two participants. The winning teams were:

Bioinformatics is an integrative field in life sciences that combines biology and information technology. Being a combination of different branches of life sciences, the field employs methodologies and tools to study large volumes of biological data (genomic, RNA, protein, etc) in order to organize, store, systematize, visualize, annotate, query, understand and interpret those data.
This workshop had 30 participants with a science background at HSC level and comprised of 8 lecture series distributed across February-March on Saturdays and Sundays.

National Mathematics is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Ramanujan, one of the greatest Indian Mathematicians. The session started with a brief description about the life of Ramanujan by Deep Bhavesh Padharia, a student of SYBSc. This was followed by talk by the resource person, Anoop Skaria Varghese. The title of the talk was ‘Mystical Numbers’. The talk was based on introduction to certain numbers of special form like Mersenne Numbers, Fermat Numbers, Perfect Numbers, Amicable Numbers, etc. and their applications.

Significance of MIS in Management Decisions

Most of the students found the session to be good, as the resource person had a tremendous amount of knowledge. Most of the students expressed a satisfactory response for the talk. Online Internship Program for college students is an initiative taken up by Indian Women Scientists Association to promote Science Education. The TYBSc Biotechnology practical curriculum has a mandatory skill-based laboratory research project which the Covid-19 pandemic had impacted. To compensate, we approached IWSA for collaboration with SIES to conduct an internship program with biotechnology students.
31 undergraduate students (25 TY and 6 SY) participated in the internship programme who were divided into 6 groups.

Department of Botany conducted one bridge course per semester in online mode through MS Teams platform. The details of the bridge courses were as follows.
o Semester-I – Study of parts of microscope (20th & 22nd October 2022)
o Semester-II – Morphology of flowering plants (28th January & 2nd February 2022)
Powerpoint presentations were shown for better understanding of the concepts related to light microscope and dissection microscope in the first semester and morphological aspects of angiosperms in the second semester. A glossary of important terminologies was provided to the students for reference.

The department of Chemistry organized Intracollegiate competition titled EXPERIMENTAL A platform to convert theoretical reactant to a skillful presentation product! was held online on Tuesday, 7th September 2021 between 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm online via Microsoft Teams Platform. During the pandemic in the year 2021 2022 department of chemistry had given an option to all SYBSc and TYBSc chemistry students to prepare a presentation on various topics of chemistry on the basis of their application in advanced chemistry topics. They were given a choice to use any technical software to create their own video in the presentation as a presenter of the topic. They were allowed to use MS power point or any online video editing software or use household self-designed model for presentation.

NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETTION: THE DATA SUMMIT

The Data Summit was a national level competition conducted from 13th August to 16th August 2021. In all 46 teams participated each consisting of atmost two participants. The teams were divided into two groups- Under-graduates and Post-graduates. These two groups were judged separately. The competition consisted of two main events. The first event was called “Clash of Visualisers”. Teams had to prepare graphs or diagrams for the given dataset and draw inferences out of it. Event 1 was a qualifier round for Event two. It was judged by Mr. Salim Shaikh, Senior Manager at HDFC Bank. Event 2 was named “Analytics”. The qualifying teams were given a new dataset for analysing and had to present the findings in 24 hours. This event was judged by Dr. Leela Subramanian and Dr. P. P. Khandeparkar, ex-faculties of SIES College.

The event started at 4:50 p.m. and concluded at 6:30 p.m. in the evening and a total number of 244+ attendees participated in the webinar and 30+ people viewed the webinar on YouTube. Students, Professors and Research Scholars pan-India as well as across India actively participated in the event. Dr. Pramod K. Nayar, the speaker spoke about a specific form of cultural trauma connected with biopolitics i.e., Posthuman Trauma. Dr. Nayar explained the meanings of terms such as Cultural Trauma and Citizenship, Biopolitics, Eco Precarity, and Precarious Corporeality with the aid of a PowerPoint Presentation. He further elaborated his points by giving real-life and contemporary examples of books and movies. The second part of the event was a Q&A session with the speaker, students raised important and intriguing questions which were answered by Dr. Nayar. A vote of thanks was raised applauding everyone who contributed in making the National Webinar possible.

A webinar on “Introduction to probability and its applications” was organized by the Department of Statistics SIES College on 24th July 2021 by Dr. Leela Subramanian, an ex-faculty of the college. Dr. Subramanian explained the essence of probability with examples on the subject throughout various domains. She also introduced many in-depth theoretical aspects of the subject, the webinar was interactive and vibrant throughout, students were asked to solve various questions, also many of their doubts and ambiguities about probability was solved by Dr. Subramanian. The speaker also motivated students by explaining the wide role and application of statistics and probability and how to pursue the same as a dominant feature in the aspect of their career. Madam also discussed about various paradoxes in probability theory which helped students to strengthen their concepts which in turn developed their keen interest in the subject. 90 students & all faculty members attended the lecture.

The session started with a welcome address by Mr. Roy Mathew, Head of the Department, followed by the introduction of the resource person by Mrs. Maria Fernandes. The workshop was divided into 4 sections. In the first session, the speaker discussed Mutual Funds and smart ways to get along with it. The speaker stressed on small SIPs so as to create maximum wealth. In the second session, the speaker spoke about several other ways of investments. Various products like Insurance, Health Insurance, National Pension Scheme, Kisan Vikas Patra, Home Loan, Credit Cards, etc. were discussed. More focus was made to make the participants aware about dos and donts w.rt these products. The session concluded with a question and answer round. CA Avin K Shah proposed the vote of thanks and feedback form link was circulated online. The workshop witnessed a total of 45 participants which included 36 students, 6 teaching staff and 3 non-teaching staff.

This was to commemorate the International Yoga Day 2021. The workshop focused on instilling a consistent and healthy habit of practicing Yoga and Pranayam to promote well-being and wellness. The target participants were the non-teaching staff of the college. They being an important stakeholder of the institution and considering their lifestyles issues and health problems, the workshop helped create awareness in them about the importance of physical and mental health. Along with the non-teaching staff, teachers and students enthusiastically participated in the event.
