Introduction to Astronomy

Conducted an Add-on two credit course Introduction to Astronomy. This is an inter-disciplinary course conducted in collaboration with Khagol Mandal. The valedictory function is scheduled on 15/3/2020 but postponed due to lock-down.
TWO CREDIT COURSE TITLED INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY

The two credit course titled Basic Course in Astronomy was designed and planned in association with Khagol Mandal, a non-profit that has been in engaged in Astronomy popularization in Maharashtra for the last 34 years. As per the lecture plan which was distributed to the students at the beginning, lectures were to be held every Saturday from 3pm to 5pm. The first lecture was conducted on the 15th of November 2019 and the invited speaker was Dr Aniket Sule. A total of 24 participants registered for the course. This included 20 students and 4 faculty members. Of the 20 students, 18 are eligible for the 2 credits allotted to the course. A total of 15 lectures (14 Regular lectures and 1 Valedictory) with 31 Total contact hours were conducted. An overnight stargazing trip was arranged on the 20th of February 2020 that was the practical component of the course. The last lecture for the course was held on 29th February 2020. The evaluation of the students was done on the basis of a 2/3 page lecture synopsis that were submitted by each student for every lecture. The synopsis was to include their understanding of the lecture with accompanying essential diagrams/images. Some of the highlight lectures included a lecture on Cosmology and a lecture on Astrobiology. The valedictory function for the course will be held on the 10th of March 2020.

Writing and Publishing a Research Paper

A detailed lecture on how to choose a topic, write a title , and report scientific findings were taught to students with precise examples of each. Thus the speaker Dr. Mrinalini Purandare made it simple for the students to understand and also raised their curiosity in conducting research.
‘Towards Better Governance’

‘Towards Better Governance’ where students of SYBA (Politics) made presentations based on local surveys and assessment of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s (MCGM) Central Complaints Registration System (1912). This was a collaborative effort with Praja Foundation.
Empathy - Value of month

The Department of Biotechnology conducted a program on empathy which was the value for the month of February. The program saw active participation by both the UG and PG students. The SYBSc students recited poems focusing on the issues of bullying in colleges. The FY students presented on the deterioration of marine life and stressed upon the reason why one should be empathetic towards the same. The TY students chose and spoke on the topic being empathetic towards people suffering from rare genetic disorders. They shared their views on the same through a group song The post graduate students spoke on the issues faced by the population belonging to the third gender and how one needs to show empathy towards them and treat them with respect. The session was moderated by Mr Sampat Sambasivan, Asst. Professor, Department of Economics.
Basic Skills in MS Office

The department of Biochemistry in collaboration with Center for excellence, SIES College had organized a two day workshop 'Basic skills in Microsoft office' for TYBSc on 6th February and 2nd Marchn
2020. Biochemistry (3 Units) .MS Office being the most widely used application around the world, every student /working professional needs hands-on knowledge to complete his tasks effectively. In this course, the participants were introduced to MS Word , MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
