A webinar on “Investment Strategies for Beginners” 24/04/22 A webinar on “Investment Strategies for Beginners” was organized by the Department of Statistics SIES College on 24th April 2022 & conducted by Mr. Ninad Padwal, Wealth Manager Sunit Investment. Mr. Padwal explained the reasons for investing early along with examples, he practically explained the idea of inflation and how to tackle it. He later explained the benefits of Systematic Investment Plans (SIP) along with real time returns from the same and how and where to invest for a prosperous future. Utkarsha 24/02/22 On 24th February 2022 as part of Utkarsha, two events were organized by TYBSc Students. They were “Unlock the Doc”& “Shark Tank”. Unlock the Doc: It was a treasure hunt where 6 p.d.f. files were shared where one had to find clues in one file to open the next one. The Team which could unlock all 6 files first were declared winners. The clues were based on general knowledge and logical thinking. A total of 17 teams participated for the event each having two participants. Top 3 winning teams were: First Prize: Nusrat & Palak Second Prize: Celine & Ishika Third Prize: Sharanya & Shreya Shark Tank: The event is inspired by the famous TV show “Shark Tank India”. The participants were the entrepreneurs who had to pitch their business model to the investors, also called as the ‘Sharks’. The entrepreneurs then asked for some amount and in exchange offered some percentage of equity to the investors. On the basis of prospects of profitability and the idea’s vigour, the ‘Sharks’ countered the offer. Seven teams participated in the event; each team having two participants. NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETTION: THE DATA SUMMIT 13/08/21 The Data Summit was a national level competition conducted from 13th August to 16th August 2021. In all 46 teams participated each consisting of atmost two participants. The teams were divided into two groups- Under-graduates and Post-graduates. These two groups were judged separately. The competition consisted of two main events. The first event was called “Clash of Visualisers”. Teams had to prepare graphs or diagrams for the given dataset and draw inferences out of it. Event 1 was a qualifier round for Event two. It was judged by Mr. Salim Shaikh, Senior Manager at HDFC Bank. Event 2 was named “Analytics”. The qualifying teams were given a new dataset for analysing and had to present the findings in 24 hours. This event was judged by Dr. Leela Subramanian and Dr. P. P. Khandeparkar, ex-faculties of SIES College. A webinar on “Introduction to probability and its application 24/07/21 A webinar on “Introduction to probability and its applications” was organized by the Department of Statistics SIES College on 24th July 2021 by Dr. Leela Subramanian, an ex-faculty of the college. Dr. Subramanian explained the essence of probability with examples on the subject throughout various domains. She also introduced many in-depth theoretical aspects of the subject, the webinar was interactive and vibrant throughout, students were asked to solve various questions, also many of their doubts and ambiguities about probability was solved by Dr. Subramanian. The speaker also motivated students by explaining the wide role and application of statistics and probability and how to pursue the same as a dominant feature in the aspect of their career. Madam also discussed about various paradoxes in probability theory which helped students to strengthen their concepts which in turn developed their keen interest in the subject. 90 students & all faculty members attended the lecture. A webinar on ‘The Role of Data Scientists in Banking sector’ 29/06/21 A webinar on ‘The Role of Data Scientists in Banking sector’ by Mr. Alen Aruldhas, Vigilance Manager, DCB Bank was organized by the Department Of Statistics on the occasion of National Statistics day, June 29, 2021. Mr. Aruldhas addressed the issues related to different branches of banking sector and the major impact caused by data scientists due to their influential work in the banking sector. 60 students attended the webinar. Certificate Course on R programming 24/09/17 A Certificate Course on R programming was conducted for our students from 24th July to 30th Sep 2017 in collaboration with Finstat. R is an open source programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics that is supported by the R Foundation for Statistical Computing. Workshop on 6 Sigma techniques 07/02/17 Workshop on 6 Sigma techniques in the industry and LEAN methods was conducted for students of TYBSc by N R Hegde who is a Master Black Belt in Six Sigma. Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the output of a process by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, mainly statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization, who are experts in these methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has specific value targets, for example: reduce process cycle time, reduce pollution, reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, and increase profits. Stat-o-mania : Triquest 19/09/16 Stat-o-mania : Triquest was conducted during Utkarsha 16-17. It consisted of three sub events: 1. Taboo with a twist:The participants were shown different pictures and asked to find out the statistical word describing the pictures. 2. Data analysis:The participants were made to solve basic multiple choice questions which were solved using their basic statistical knowledge and logical thinking. 3 Guess the word:The participants were made to hear songs and guess the statistical word hidden in the song. 24/08/16 An industrial visit was organized for the students of SYBSC and TYBSc to Goa from 24th 29th Aug 2016. 19 students from the Statistics department were part of this visit. The purpose of the visit was to understand how class room teaching of the subject like Quality Control techniques are used in industry. We visited the Statistical Quality departments of two big plants- Monginis cake factory and Goa Paints & Allied products plant. The students got a clear perception into the working of the Statistical Quality Control departments in these plants. We also visited Dona Paula & Calangute beach as also the Arussim beach right next to the Heritage Village Club Arussim where we stayed. The Basilica of Bom Jesus which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Fort Aguada were also part of our itinerary. No photo gallery linked No report file linked
