RUSA sponsored ‘Online Workshop for Developing & Refining Skills 12/02/22 Bioinformatics is an integrative field in life sciences that combines biology and information technology. Being a combination of different branches of life sciences, the field employs methodologies and tools to study large volumes of biological data (genomic, RNA, protein, etc) in order to organize, store, systematize, visualize, annotate, query, understand and interpret those data. IWSA-SIES Internship Program for undergraduates 18/11/21 Online Internship Program for college students is an initiative taken up by Indian Women Scientists Association to promote Science Education. The TYBSc Biotechnology practical curriculum has a mandatory skill-based laboratory research project which the Covid-19 pandemic had impacted. To compensate, we approached IWSA for collaboration with SIES to conduct an internship program with biotechnology students. 31 undergraduate students (25 TY and 6 SY) participated in the internship programme who were divided into 6 groups. Empathy - Value of month 03/03/20 The Department of Biotechnology conducted a program on empathy which was the value for the month of February. The program saw active participation by both the UG and PG students. The SYBSc students recited poems focusing on the issues of bullying in colleges. The FY students presented on the deterioration of marine life and stressed upon the reason why one should be empathetic towards the same. The TY students chose and spoke on the topic being empathetic towards people suffering from rare genetic disorders. They shared their views on the same through a group song The post graduate students spoke on the issues faced by the population belonging to the third gender and how one needs to show empathy towards them and treat them with respect. “Techniques in Proteomics” 26/02/18 The Department of Biotechnology conducted a three day workshop on “Techniques in Proteomics” for the teachers from various colleges across Maharashtra. The workshop, held between 26th February and 28th February2018 was supported by the ‘Teachers training programme’ of the Lady Tata Memorial Trust. The workshop was aimed at providing theoretical and practical knowledge about the methodologies, experimental designs; laboratory instrumentation and advanced equipments used for proteomic data generation as well as bioinformatics techniques used for the analysis and interpretation of protein sequence data 25 teachers were selected for the workshop on the basis of their statements of purpose. The key note speaker was Dr Surekha Zingde, Former Deputy Director, ACTREC, Navi Mumbai and President, IWSA. The lectures on different topics related to proteomics were delivered by eminent scientists from ACTREC, BARC, IIT(B), NIRRH and Shimadzu Analytical (India). CREDIT BASED SEMESTER AND GRADING SYSTEM – SYBSc BIOTECHNOLOGY 22/06/15 The work-shop was attended by around 38 teachers from 35 Colleges under the Department of Biotechnology, Mumbai University.
